Anna Barnett

Anna was born in the Netherlands and moved to Canada as a young child with her parents and siblings. She currently lives on the shores of Lake Manitou near the community of Mindemoya on Manitoulin Island.

Anna is a fabric artist and seamstress. She has been sewing since childhood and was taught by an accomplished trained designer and seamstress.  She has worked in both the fashion and industrial sewing sectors.  Northern Creative, her company, was established in 1982 and for the past 10 years has been active on Manitoulin Island. Anna owned and operated Northern Creative Studio Gallery, located in the Harbour Centre for the Arts in Gore Bay for the last seven years.

Anna places a high priority on repurposing old garments as demonstrated by Anna’s mitts, hats and memory bears. Her mitts are made from repurposed, previously-loved, wool sweaters that are felted to tighten the knit for a warm, wind-resistant mitt. They are lined with fleece for extra warmth and a cozy feel. Anna has created fall, winter and spring hats in four different styles: Tibetan, Cloche, Bucket and Pillbox/Slouch.  The Tibetan and Cloche style hats are also made from repurposed, wool sweaters. The Bucket Hats are made from boiled wool and Tapestry Pillbox Hats are made from repurposed, previously-loved tapestry/carpet jackets. Anna also specializes in creating Memory Bears made from a cherished piece of clothing from your loved one as a reminder of them. Previously loved fur coats and shawls can also be transformed into a memory bear, rabbit, headband or pillow covering.
